Around the MIAA

Albion

Swimmers Tyler Kimbrell (100- and 200-yard breaststroke) and Mac Robertson (distance freestyle) and diver Jake Burris all won two events for Albion in the dual meet against Calvin…In the dual meet vs. Alma, Burris celebrated senior day by earning 596.40 points in the 1-meter competition (to break the school and pool records for 11 dives) and 351.10 to improve on his school record in the 3-meter. Along the way on his 1-meter set, Burris improved on his school record score for six dives, while also breaking the pool record… Drew Fogel was the only swimmer to take first place in multiple events against Alma, winning the distance freestyle events… Winning individual events for the Britons in the dual vs. Alma were Erik Halboth (100 backstroke), Jake Huttenlocher (100 breaststroke), Matt Anderson (200 butterfly), Ian Moran (50 freestyle), Tommy Trueax (100 freestyle), Robbie Hagner (200 backstroke), Connor Robertson (200 breaststroke), Evan Wonner (100 butterfly) and Noah Mitchell (200 individual medley).


Alma

Alma dropped a dual meet to Albion on Saturday (Jan. 12), 169-70. Senior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich.) won the men's 200-yard freestyle. The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ferrara, freshman Connor Hart (Northville, Mich.), freshman Will Brown (Spring Lake, Mich.) and freshman Leevi Olson (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) also earned a win with a time of 1:35.17. 


No. 11 Calvin

Calvin recorded a 149.5-138.5 dual meet victory at Albion Friday night. Senior Ben Holstege was a triple-winner, claiming victory in the 200 freestyle (1:44.38), 100 freestyle (50.94) and 200 IM (1:57.19). His win in the 200 IM helped the Knights build a two-point lead heading into the final event - the 400 freestyle relay. Calvin's 400 freestyle relay of sophomore Julian Iturbe, senior Jared Britton, senior Skyler Fish and junior Tim Randall took home the win in a time of 3:10.87. Fish had a big night individually, winning the 100 backstroke (52.90) and 200 backstroke (1:57.89). Iturbe won the 100 freestylee (48.01) and was second in the 50 freestyle (22.11). Briton won the 50 freestyle (22.06), leading a 1-2-3 Calvin sweep in the event. Noah Holstege was also third in the race (22.21). In the 200 butterfly, senior Nate Olberding took first place with a time of 1:58.91.


Hope

Swimmer Daniel Keith (Saline, Mich.) won one event and tied for first is another to top Hope College at the Michigan-Illinois Quad hosted by Wheaton College (Illinois) on Saturday. The Flying Dutchmen finished with 400.5 points. Wheaton won with 558 points and was followed by runner-up Kalamazoo College with 431.5 points, Hope, and Lake Forest College with 396 points. Keith clocked a winning 200 backstroke swim of 1:53.11 and tied for first in the 50 freestyle with Kalamazoo’s Grant Stille. Both went 21.57. On Friday, diver Grant Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich.) delivered two season-best performances at Wabash College on Friday in Crawfordsville, Ind. Williams posted six-dive totals of 292.75 points on the 3-meter board and 291.85 on the 1-meter board.


Kalamazoo

The Hornets finished second at the Wheaton Quad on Saturday. Kalamazoo fell to the hosts, Wheaton, but defeated both Hope and Lake Forest. Grant Stille tied for first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.57. The Hornets had a number of second-place finishers including Nick Nerhood (200 Butterfly), Sharif Shaker (200 Backstroke), Matt Howrey (200 Breaststroke), 400 Medley Relay (Shaker, Anger, Orwin, Durden), and the 400 Free Relay (Shaker, Stille, Orwin, Roberts). Kalamazoo is back in action next Saturday, Jan. 19 when the Hornets host Hope at 1 p.m. in the final meet at the current Kalamazoo College Natatorium.


Olivet

Did not compete. Olivet will take to the pool Saturday, Jan. 19 in MIAA action at Alma for a 1 p.m. meet.
