Around the MIAA

RV Albion

Did not compete. The Britons return to the pool for competition Friday, Jan. 11 for a home meet against MIAA challenger Calvin at 6 p.m.


Alma

The Alma College swim and dive team competed in the A3 Carthage Classic last week, with the Scots finishing eighth. Many Scots qualified to compete in the finals events, eight of which finished among the top ten of all swimmers in their races. Senior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) swam in the 200-meter freestyle finals and took sixth place, finishing the race in 1:48.12 and improving his previous personal record for that event in the process.


No. 15 Calvin

Calvin took third at its own Calvin Winter Invite over the weekend, recording a three-day team total of 1,230 points, finishing only behind GLIAC foes Northern Michigan and Grand Valley State. Over the course of the three-day meet, Calvin shattered six school records. Sophomore Julian Iturbe broke school records in the 200 freestyle (1:38.50) and 400 IM (4:01.44). Jared Britton hit a school record in the 50 freestyle (20.33) while senior Ben Holstege came up with a school record in the 100 backstroke (47.98). The time by Holstege is currently the top time in Division III. Calvin also broke school records in the 200 medley relay (1:29.40) and 200 freestyle relay (1:21.62). Both relay times are currently ranked fifth nationally.


Hope

Hope College swimmer Daniel Keith (Saline, Mich./Saline) broke the 200-yard individual medley school record during the Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational this weekend. Keith clocked a time of 1 minute, 54.42 seconds during Friday’s preliminaries to surpass the previous mark of 1:52.51 that teammate Daniel Clyde set last season. Keith went on to finish third in the championship final with a swim of 1:54.25. Clyde recorded the second-fastest, 400 individual medley swim in the championship final at 4:08.09. Also, Two Hope College men’s divers finished runner-up in their respective events during the Carthage College Invitational on Saturday. Senior Brian Simonich (Highland, Mich./Milford) placed second out of 11 divers on the 3-meter board during the event hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Sophomore Grant Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) took second in the 1-meter board.


Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team finished sixth at the three day Calvin Invitational. Posting top times for the Hornets on Saturday were: 200 Medley Relay (Shaker, Anger, Orwin, Stille) -1:34.00, Grant Anger (500 Free) -5:09.42, Sharif Shaker (200 Back) - 1:56.74, Michael Orwin (100 Fly) - :51.89, Adam Coe (200 Breast) - 2:19.44, Scott Roberts (100 Free) - :47.80, Matt Howrey (200 IM) - 1:57.43, and Tejas Vettukattil (1M Diving) - 272.15. Kalamazoo is scheduled to compete next Jan. 12, 2019 at Wheaton.
