Around the MIAA

Adrian (5-5-0, 2-0-0)

The Adrian College men’s soccer team opened up conference play last week with two wins. The Bulldogs took down Kalamazoo 2-1 on the road on Wednesday before defeating Olivet 5-1 at home on Saturday. All seven goals were scored by different players and senior Zachary Roller led the team with three points last week. The Black and Gold have two games this week, hosting Albion on Tuesday and traveling to Calvin on Saturday.

Albion (5-4-2, 0-2-0)

Will Colborn (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored Albion's only goal of the week. He scored his fifth of the season in Albion's loss at Alma.

Alma (5-5-0, 2-0-0)

The men's soccer team came away with a pair of 2-1 wins last week against Olivet and Albion. Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored the game-winner against the Britons in the 108th minute after the two teams were tied at one for over 70 minutes of game time. He and Kyle Framer (Greenville, Mich./Greenville) put away the Comets earlier in the week. Sam Swem (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) also scored his first career goal against Albion.

No. 3/2 Calvin (10-1-0, 2-0-0)

On Wednesday, Calvin defeated rival Hope 5-0. Bobby McCaw had two goals for the Knights, while goalkeeper Chris Morrish had a shut out with four saves. Then on Saturday, the Knights defeated Trine 7-0. McCaw had a hat trick in the win, while Morrish had two saves and a shut out.

No. 20 Hope (10-1-0, 1-1-0)

A demanding two-week stretch for the Hope College men’s soccer team ended with a fortuitous bounce. A failed Kalamazoo College clearing attempt late led to an own goal and a 2-1 victory for the Flying Dutchmen Saturday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Hope rebounded from its first loss of the season on Wednesday, 5-0 at fourth-ranked Calvin College, to raise its record to 10-1 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutchmen scored two unanswered goals during the second half to beat Kalamazoo, including one from junior Isaac Braak of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS).

Kalamazoo (3-8-0, 0-2-0)

The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team began MIAA play this week with a pair of 2-1 losses to Adrian and Hope. Freshman Jack Didato connected with his first career college goal in the first match with Adrian. Jacob Lopez Pink delivered the goal for Kalamazoo over the weekend and also led the team with three points on the week. The Hornets got on the scoreboard first in both matches, but were unable to maintain the lead in either game. Kalamazoo returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Trine.

Olivet (4-6-1, 0-2-0)

The Olivet College men's soccer team opened MIAA play with a 2-1 loss at home to Alma and 5-1 loss on the road at Adrian. Joshua Rosendale scored the lone goal against the Scots, while Reece Burton found the back of the net for the only goal against the Bulldogs.

Trine (8-2-1, 1-1-0)

Men's soccer ended the week with a 2-0 win against Albion, but fell to Calvin, 7-0.
