Around the MIAA

Adrian (1-0, 0-0)

The Adrian College men's soccer team opened up its season with a win on Friday, Aug. 31. The Bulldogs scored a late goal in the 83rd minute to beat Wittenberg and give Ryan McDonald a win in his first game as head coach, after previously serving as an assistant for four years.


Albion (2-0, 0-0)

Jonathon Daily, who did not score a goal last season, scored a goal in each of the first two matches of the season,. Alex Spratte, a sophomore in the midfielder from Canton, Mich., has three goals, including two in the draw vs. Wheaton.


Alma (1-1, 0-0)

The men's soccer team went 1-1 to open its season. Junior forward Kyle Farmer (Greenville, Mich. / Greenville) scored both goals in the Scots' win over Greenville, his first goals since the 2016 season. Sophomore midfielder Nick Stander (Macomb Twp. Mich. / Dakota) scored his first career goal and junior goalkeeper Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) recorded his first career assist against Millikin.


Calvin (2-0, 0-0)

No. 7 Calvin captured the championship the Calvin Bergsma Memorial Tournament last weekend, defeating Stockton University 5-2 on Friday and Manchester 8-0 on Saturday. The Knights finished ahead of Hope in the weekend exchanged tournament by virtue of goal differential. In Friday's victory, senior Jacob Witte scored two goals picked up an assist. On Saturday, senior Lucas Albrecht scored a pair of goals, slamming one home in the final second of the first half and then scoring in the second half off a rare goalkeeper assist from Luke Schepers. Senior Bobby McCaw had two goals and two assists in the tournament while junior Hunter Olson had two goals and one assist. Freshmen Mason Smith and Sam Twigg also scored their first goals of their collegiate careers. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Morrish picked up his first two victories in a Calvin uniform. Calvin will join league member Hope in a trip to Ohio Northern this weekend to play in an exchange tournament that includes Ohio Northern and Millikin.


Hope (2-0, 0-0)

The Hope College men’s soccer team began the Dave Brandt era as a head coach on winning note — with victories against Richard Stockton University (New Jersey), 2-1, in overtime on Saturday and 3-0 against Manchester College (Indiana) on Friday. Junior Logan Bylsma of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) scored the winning goal against Richard Stockton. This is the first season for Brandt, a former six-time national champion at Messiah University (Pennsylvania).


Kalamazoo (0-2, 0-0)

The Kalamazoo College men’s soccer team started the season with road losses at Illinois Wesleyan (2-1) and Millikin (3-0). The Hornets’ goal by Trevor Towghi came in the 83rd minute, but they were unable to complete the comeback. Chris DeVito and Luke Kastran shared time in goal for Kalamazoo and combined for five saves.


Olivet (0-2, 0-0)

The Olivet College men's soccer team lost 1-0 to Edgewood (Wis.) College Aug. 31 in its season-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Comets then fell to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 3-1, Sept. 2.


Trine (1-0, 0-0)

Senior Ben Moricz (Niles, Mich./Niles) and sophomore Jonathan Slone (Troy, Ohio/Troy Christian) both scored two goals to help lead the Trine University men's soccer team to a 7-1 win against Edgewood (Wis.) College in the season and home opener at Weaver Field.
