Calvin Topped in Double Overtime by Tufts in National Championship

SALEM, Va. - The Calvin men's soccer team (23-3-0) came up just short in their attempt to hoist the national championship trophy Saturday afternoon, as the Knights lost to Tufts 1-0 in the second overtime of the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship game.

It was the third appearance in the title match for Calvin in program history, but the third time did not prove to be a charm for the Knights.

Tufts (15-5-2) converted on a volley from six yards out on a corner kick in the 104th minute of play to capture their second national title in three seasons.

Calvin goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn made five saves in the contest to keep the Jumbos at bay. Offensively, Calvin had a 10-5 corner kick advantage and a 13-10 shots margin in regulation; Tufts out-shot the Knights 4-0 in the overtime periods.

Earning NCAA All-Tournament Team honors for Calvin were Trent Vegter, Jacob Witte, and Isky Van Doorne.
