Hope Men's Soccer Tops Grace Bible In Season Opener

Senior Andreas Slette snapped a free kick past a stingy opposing goalie, and the Hope College men's soccer team was on its way to starting the 2015 season on a winning note.

The Flying Dutchmen beat Grace Bible College 4-0 on Tuesday in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 899.

Slette, a forward from Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), snapped a scoreless tie with 7 ½ minutes after Grace Bible (1-2) drew a red card for a foul and set up a free kick from about 20 yards out.

Senior Michael Johns of Flushing, Michigan (Flushing HS), buried a shot into the top left corner of the goal from 30 yards out 1 ½ minutes before halftime to extend Hope's lead to 2-0. Junior Miguel Ramirez of Joliet, Illinois (Joliet Township West HS).

The Flying Dutchmen tacked on second-half goals from junior Alex Lindsey of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), off an assist from junior Thomas Conerty of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS), and Ramirez off an assist freshman James Reymann of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne HS).

Sophomore Joseph Fifer of Caledonia, Michigan (Caledonia HS), recorded the shutout in goal with two saves.

Hope returns to action this weekend by hosting the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. The Flying Dutchmen play St. Scholastica, Minnesota Friday at 7 p.m. and Illinois Wesleyan Saturday at 7 p.m.
