MIAA Tournament Preview

Posted: April 28, 2015

The third season of MIAA men’s lacrosse reaches its climax this week with the conference tournament that begins with semifinal games on Wednesday night.

The semifinal matchups pit MIAA champion and top seed Albion (6-0, 10-5) at home against fourth-seed Olivet (3-3, 5-9), while two-time tournament champion and No. 2 seed Adrian (5-1, 10-4) entertains third-seeded Alma (4-2, 11-5).

Albion dominated both ends of the field in earning its first MIAA championship, leading the conference in goals scored (110 in six conference games) and allowing the fewest goals (42). Senior Tim Urso led the MIAA in goals with 21, while teammate Alexander Dziewit added 19 plus eight assists. Senior Kyle Formanczyk was solid in goal, saving 56 percent of the shots that came his way in conference play.

Olivet, meanwhile, has some offensive threats of its own, led by junior attacker Dakota Badder with 13 goals and eight assists in MIAA play. Badder scored the winning goal in all three of the Comets’ conference wins this season. Junior goalkeeper Ryan McGee led the MIAA in saves with 71, including a spectacular effort against Alma where he tied a conference record with 21 stops.

After going unbeaten against MIAA foes in each of the first two seasons the conference sponsored the sport, Adrian is the No. 2 seed after falling to Albion. The Bulldogs still have a lot of firepower, with four different players scoring at least 10 goals in MIAA play – Adam Findlay (15), 2014 MIAA Offensive Most Valuable Player Eric Fannell (14), Mitch Burgin (12) and Doug Boyd (11). Boyd led the MIAA in assists with 13.

A strong defense propelled Alma into the MIAA tournament, despite only averaging 9.2 goals a contest. The Scots led the conference in caused turnovers, getting opponents to cough up the ball an average of 11 times per game. Junior Sam Korbel is an anchor along the backline, causing 15 turnovers and scooping up 43 ground balls in conference play. Marshall Argenta is Alma’s main scoring threat with 10 goals against MIAA opponents.

The Albion-Olivet semifinal begins at 5 p.m. at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium, while Adrian and Alma get started at 7 p.m. at Docking Stadium. The winners will play for the MIAA tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday at the highest remaining seed.

He had 11 ground balls and won 10 of 14 faceoffs in a 19-8 victory over Hope, then nabbed nine ground balls and won 12 of 13 faceoffs in a 20-6 win over Alma that clinched the outright MIAA title.
