The Hope men's golf team took the early lead on the four-team field in the first of three rounds to determine the MIAA NCAA automatic qualifier April 22 at Watermark Country Club, hosted by Calvin.
The Flying Dutchmen combined for a four-over 292, owning a nine-stroke lead over Calvin through the first round of play. Kalamazoo posted a team score of 305 to trail the Knights by four strokes.
Both Kade Hoeksema and Winton Munch of Hope shot two-under 70 to tie for first place, while teammate Josh Gibson is in third with a one-under 71. Kalamazoo's Phil Ritchie and Calvin's Ben Van Scoyk each shot even par 72.
The final two rounds of the automatic qualifier tournament are slated for April 28 and 29 at West Olive, Mich., hosted by Hope.
