No. 7 Hope Men's Basketball Shoots Way Past Olivet For 94-58 Win

Guard Alex Eidson deferred credit, but the seventh-ranked Hope College men's basketball team welcomed his record-tying contribution to a 94-58 win against Olivet on Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The senior from Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) tied a DeVos Fieldhouse record with seven 3-pointers off the bench en route to a season-high and game-high 21 points.

Eidson recorded half of Hope's season-high and near-record 14 3-pointers as a team.

"It always feels good to make shots," Eidson said. "We had 24 assists as a team and we moved the ball. I just reaped the benefits."

Eidson matched teammate Sam Otto's DeVos Fieldhouse-record seven 3-pointers from a December 5 against Carthage, Wisconsin. He came within one 3-pointer of matching the school record shared by Kyle VanderWall (2001) and Daane Griffith and (2005).

The 24 assists were the second-highest in a single game this season. They totaled 27 against Grace Bible on December 22.

The victory set up a rematch with Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association-leading Alma, a 68-63 win at Adrian Wednesday. Hope (18-2 overall, 8-1 MIAA) can pull even with Alma in the MIAA standings by winning Saturday's game that tips off at 7:30 p.m.

The Flying Dutchmen are on a six-game win streak.

"It is good to feel this way after a win," Hope coach Greg Mitchell said. "We challenged the guys to play a full 40 minutes. We were dialed in and didn't take our foot off the gas. When they went to zone, Alex lit them up … a huge weapon."

Two other Flying Dutchmen scored in double figures: senior center Brock Benson of Willowbrook, Illinois (Hinsdale South HS) with 16 points and junior forward Harrison Blackledge of Canton, Ohio (Hoover HS) with 10.

Senior guard Ben Gardner of Carmel, Indiana (Carmel HS) and senior forward Sam Otto of Wheaton, Illinois (Wheaton North HS) chipped in nine points apiece.

Hope's 14 3-pointers were one short of a DeVos Fieldhouse record shared by the 2008 team (twice) and 2007 team (once).

The Flying Dutchmen's 34 3-point attempts tied the overall school record set by the 1997 team against Nebraska Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
