Adrian (2-1, 0-0)
A strong defensive effort for the Adrian College football team on Saturday led to a 27-5 road victory over host Aurora in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Challenge. Freshman Kevin Smitherman led a strong Bulldogs defensive game with a career-high seven total tackles, which included 2-1/2 sacks for 16 yards. He also forced a fumble. Also representing the defense, converted running back Foster Walker and Nate Conner, both seniors, added five total tackles apiece. Senior Tim McPhee had a 22-yard interception return, sophomore Danny White contributed four tackles and a pass breakup. Senior Emmanuel Stewart rushed 22 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Jack Wurzer ran eight times for 95 yards and a TD, and was 12-for-23 passing for 122 yards and another score. Adrian moves to 6-1 lifetime in the MIAA-NACC Challenge. The MIAA took this year's Challenge by taking six of eight victories. McGaw increased his career totals to 148 receptions and 2,297 yards. Today, he passed Mitch Gabriele (146-1705, 2009-12) for second place on the list for all-time catches at Adrian College. Stewart went over 100 yards in a game for the 11 time in his career. The all-time rushing leader in school history, he also lists second among ACTIVE leaders in NCAA Division III with 4,155.
Albion (3-0, 0-0)
Albion has scored at least 56 points in all three of its games this season, which has the Britons ranked fourth nationally in scoring offense…Albion rushed for 560 yards and rolled up 726 total yards in the victory over Concordia (Ill.) last Saturday…RB Markell McCoy (Oak Park, Mich./Ferndale) and Doug Freeman (Niles, Mich./Buchanan) rushed for 248 and 203 yards, respectively, becoming the first Albion tandem with 100+ rushing yards in a game since Dominic Bona (121) and Mike Czarnecki (111) vs. Aurora, 11/4/15…RB Zach Serzo (Lake Orion, Mich.) added 94 rushing yards against Concordia…McCoy, Freeman and Serzo all averaged at least 10 yards per carry against Concordia…Albion is also ranked second in the NCAA in first downs (93), third in total offense (636 yards per game) and fifth in third down conversion percentage (59 percent)…Individually, QB Kyle Thomas leads D-III with 96 points responsible for. He's 9th with 918 passing yards & 11th in passing efficiency; DE Mitchell Arendsen is tied for 17th in the NCAA in sacks; RB Doug Freeman is 24th with 346 rushing yards.
Alma (1-2, 0-0)
The Alma College football team fell 26-15 to Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday (Sept. 15). Alma's (1-2) biggest deficit in the game was 12 points. It got to within three by the middle of the fourth quarter but could not take the lead. Junior quarterback Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) rushed for a career- and game-high 129 yards on 21 carries (6.1 yards per carry), including a long of 30 yards. Sophomore running back Steven Sowa (Lincoln Park, Mich. / St. Frances Cabrini) had two scores on the ground. Junior defensive back Max Kretzschmar (Marine City, Mich. / Marine City) snagged his second interception of the season.
Finlandia (0-3, 0-0)
Kenny Kujawa caught six passes for 134 yards and a touchdown and had 119 yards on kickoff returns for 253 all-purpose yards ... He was second in single-game school history for both yardages, missing the all-purpose mark by 11 yards ... Dillion Hueckstaedt had seven tackles and recovered a fumble ... The Lions held Eureka (a 2017 NCAA Playoff team) to 187 yards in total offense over the last three quarters.
Hope (2-1, 0-0)
In an impressive display of old-school power football, Hope College dominated the line of scrimmage Saturday as the Flying Dutchmen defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College 53-12 in their final non-conference game of the season. Hope, now 2-1 on the season, piled up a season-high 508 yards of total offense, including 393 on the ground in 48 attempts for an impressive 8.2-yard per carry average. Smith, a junior from Suttons Bay, Michigan (Suttons Bay HS), anchored the line that also featured strong play from tackles Timothy Ivery of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Brother Rice HS) and Brady Eding of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton HS) and guards Brady Anderson of Beverly Hills, Michigan (Birmingham Groves HS) and Noah de Velder of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS). Senior running back Mike Miklusicak of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland Union) made a triumphant return in his first game since November 2016, rushing for 146 yards on 13 carries, all in the first half.
Kalamazoo (3-0, 0-0)
The Kalamazoo College football team improved to 3-0 with a 23-7 win at Rockford College Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo put up 431 yards of total offense while limiting Rockford to just 159 yards. The Hornets rushed for 258 yards, the ninth-highest game total in school history. Zach VanFaussien was 16-of-31 passing for 173 yards. The quarterback also rushed for 97 yards on 13 carries. Jakob Frederick led the Kalamazoo defense with 12 total tackles. Joe Piet was in on 11 tackles including 2.5 sacks. Piet was honored with MIAA Player of the Week recognition.
Olivet (2-1, 0-0)
The Olivet College football beat Benedictine (Ill.) University, 42-16, in its final non-conference game. Offensively, the Comets totaled 369 yards of offense. Jamaul Martin had 12 carries for 121 yards. Matt Ellis rushed 13 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Lane Porter completed 9-of-13 passes for 111 yards. Nick Thomas caught passes for 54 yards. He also blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Chase Cavric, Jacob Jordan and Thomas Kusterer each recorded nine tackles.
#16 Trine (3-0, 0-0)
The Trine University football team captured its 13th consecutive regular-season victory with a big day on both sides of the ball in a 56-6 win over Lakeland (Wis.) University in its first road game of the season in Plymouth, Wis. Sept. 15. The Thunder offense racked up 670 total yards of offense which was the third most in a game in program history.
