Around the MIAA

Adrian (1-1, 0-0)

In his first career collegiate start, freshman Jack Wurzer passed for a school-record six touchdowns in Adrian's 56-27 home opening win over Buffalo State…Wurzer finished with 309 yards passing on 17 completions in 20 attempts and did not get picked off…His 85.0 completion percentage is believed to be the second-best mark in Adrian's single-game history…senior Jerron McGaw tied the single-game mark of five TD receptions, while establishing personal bests of 13 receptions and 256 yards for game highs.. Senior inside linebacker Tim McPhee led Adrian with 13 total tackles to surpass his career best again…The Bulldogs' 56 points are their most in a home opener since 2005 during a 61-14 romping of Heidelberg…Buffalo State and Adrian were meeting for the first time since 1999 (Bengals now lead the all-time series 2-1)…senior running back Emmanuel Stewart is the second-leading rusher with 4,018 career yards among ACTIVE players in NCAA Division III…McGaw became just the second receiver in school history to have 2,000 yards in a career…With 2,249 yards, he lists second behind Justin Hemm (195-3024, 2009-12) on the all-time chart, and third with career receptions at 142…next up, the Bulldogs travel to Aurora (Ill.) University for the MIAA-NACC Challenge.


Albion (2-0, 0-0)

Quarterback Kyle Thomas (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) has thrown for 733 yards and three touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season, that places him third in D-III. He is also first in D-III with 66 points responsible for. Defensive end Mitchell Arendsen (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) is fourth in D-III with an average of 2.25 sacks per game. As a team, Albion leads D-III in passing offense and it is fourth in third down conversions.


Alma (1-1, 0-0)

The Alma College football team won its home opener on Saturday (Sept. 8), 39-33, against Manchester. Alma led for most of the game but Manchester clawed its way back by the fourth quarter. Down 33-31 with under four minutes to go, junior dual-threat quarterback Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) scored what would be the game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion. Ippel led the Scots in all-purpose yardage — he was 13-of-22 throwing for 136 yards and two touchdowns and added 98 rushing yards on 18 attempts (5.4 yards per carry) and a score on the ground.


Finlandia (0-2, 0-0)

The Finlandia University football team (0-2) never stopped hustling in a 70-0 loss to Ripon (1-1), Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Field. Finlandia hits the road, Saturday, Sept. 15 taking on Eureka. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. CST


Hope (1-1, 0-0)

The Hope College football team prevailed with a solid run game and a stingy defense under rainy skies — shutting out Defiance College (Ohio) 41-0 on Saturday. This was the first time in 21 years that the Flying Dutchmen blanked the same opponent in consecutive seasons. Hope shutout Benedictine University (Illinois) 34-0 in 1996 and 27-0 in 1997. The Flying Dutchmen shut out Defiance 38-0 in the 2018 season opener. Junior quarterback Mason Opple of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS) was a key piece of the offense. He scored on a 2-yard run on the opening drive of the game en route to a career-high four rushing touchdowns.


Kalamazoo (2-0, 0-0)

The Kalamazoo College football team won its second game of the season on Saturday when it defeated Greenville 42-7. The Hornets took control of the game in the first quarter by jumping out to a 21-0 lead and never turned back. Senior quarterback Zach VanFaussien accounted for all five offensive touchdown for the Hornets with four in the air and one on the ground. Defensive back Matt Ford scooped up a Panther fumble and ran it back 60 yards for his first touchdown of his career.


Olivet (1-1, 0-0)

The Olivet College football team defeated Concordia University Chicago Sept. 8 in its home-opener, 52-25. Olivet totaled 579 yards of offense, including 181 rushing yards by Matt Ellis. Lane Porter completed 20-of-25 passes for 250 yards. Defensively, Chase Cavric had 12 total tackles. As a team, the Comets blocked three kicks (two PATs and one punt).


#17 Trine (2-0, 0-0)

Senior Lamar Carswell (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) rushed for a game-high 157 yards and had four total touchdowns (three rushing and one receiving) as the Trine University football team beat Bluffton University, 34-13, at Fred Zollner Stadium in Angola, Ind. Trine will play its first road game of the season when it travels to Plymouth, Wis. next Saturday (Sept. 15) to take on Lakeland University.  The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EST.
