Adrian (0-1, 0-0)

Adrian opened its 114th season of competition with a 34-17 loss at Ohio Northern, which is receiving votes in the D3football.com Top 25...AC held advantages in time of possession (32:25-27:35), first downs (19-15), passing yards (181-132) and third-down efficiency (56% on 10-for-18 to 50% on 6-12), but ONU led in total offense (321-306) and rushing yards (189-125) as well as return yardage (106-35)...Senior Jerron McGaw led all receivers with 98 yards on four catches...Emmanuel Stewart rushed for game highs of 25 attempts and 92 yards, plus he caught four passes for 43 yards...Senior inside linebacker Tim McPhee led Adrian with 11 total tackles, including four solos, for a career best...Stewart added to his AC career rushing yardage at 3,948...McGaw has 1,993 yards and 129 receptions in his career. He passed No. 2 Steve Kress (135-1971) who had 1971 receiving yards from 1999 to 2002 in school history.


Albion (1-0, 0-0)

Quarterback Kyle Thomas threw for four touchdowns, a career-high...Isaiah Gibson and Justin Thomas became the first Albion tandem with at least 100 receiving yards in a game since Brian Spencer (213 yards) and Cody Crawford (104 yards) vs. Hope in 2012...Albion collected nine sacks at Defiance, most since getting eight in the 2012 victory over Wheaton...Mitchell Arendsen was credited with three sacks...Albion collected nine sacks against Defiance. According to NCAA statistics, the Britons joined Chapman and Hendrix for most sacks by a team on the opening weekend...Only three D-III teams (Wartburg, Baldwin-Wallace and Johns Hopkins) scored more than Albion's 59 points on the opening weekend.


Alma (0-1, 0-0)

The football team dropped its season opener at Baldwin Wallace on Thursday (August 30). Junior wide receiver Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich. / Concord) was named the Lee Tressel Shrine Classic Player of the Game - he led all skill position players with 152 yards and two touchdowns on six catches, one being a 56-yard catch and run. His yardage total is the most by an Alma player since November 12, 2016. Junior quarterback Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) went for 282 yards and two scores and one interception. He completed 16 passes on 25 attempts. Sophomore running back Steven Sowa (Lincoln Park, Mich. / St. Frances Cabrini) had 10 carries for 40 yards; Ippel added 18 yards on the ground on seven carries.


Finlandia (0-1, 0-0)

The Finlandia University football team (0-1) displayed heart and toughness in a 31-3 loss to Concordia (Wis.) (1-0), Saturday afternoon at McAfee Field. For Finlandia, Kostreva had a strong day totaling 87 yards in all-purpose running.  Sophomore De'Llontae Johnsonwas 14-of-27 for 115 yards in the air.  Freshman Kenny Kujawa had a solid debut with three catches for 43 yards. Defensively, Anthony had 13 tackles and one interception for 47 yards.  Senior Dillion Hueckstaedt had eight tackles and freshman Dave Carlson had seven tackles with two sacks.


Hope (0-1, 0-0)

An amazing Community Day atmosphere Friday night at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium nearly was perfect for the Hope College football team. Millikin University (Illinois) spoiled the festivities, getting two sacks on the Flying Dutchmen's final drive to preserve a 25-21 victory in the 2018 season opener in front of a crowd of 3,010. It was the first Friday night opener for the Flying Dutchmen. Junior quarterback Mason Opple of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) threw two touchdown passes for Hope.


Kalamazoo (1-0, 0-0)

The Kalamazoo College football team opened its 2018 season with a 24-7 victory over Carthage. The Hornets were led by quarterback Zach VanFaussien who ended the game 14-25 from the air with 149 yards and a touchdown. He added 27 yards and another score on the ground. Junior running back Jared Pittman rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries and added a score of his own against the Yeomen.


Olivet (0-1, 0-0)

The Olivet College football team opened its season with a heartbreaking 21-17 loss Sept. 1 at Heidelberg University. The Comets led 17-7 late in the fourth quarter until the Student Princes scored two touchdowns to post the come-from-behind win. Despite the loss, sophomore Matthew Ellis had 19 carries for 105 yards. Senior Lane Porter completed 15-of-30 passes for 231 yards. Senior Jacob Jodway caught three passes for 104 yards. Senior Chase Cavric topped the defense with 10 total tackles.


Trine (1-0, 0-0)

Seniors Lamar Carswell (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) and Marcus Winters (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) both moved up in the Trine University football record books with their efforts in a 55-7 win against Manchester University in the season and home opener at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium. Carswell finished the game with three rushing touchdowns and one receiving (four total) to put him at the top of the all-time standings in both points scored (290) and touchdowns scored (48). Winters picked up where he left off last season and was one of four defensive players to record an interception against the Spartans.  His interception now gives him 19 in his career, tying him for the all-time lead.
