Around the MIAA

Adrian (4-5, 2-4)

Adrian wraps up 2018 on Saturday with a home date against Hope College on Senior Day...the Bulldogs gave nationally-ranked and defending MIAA champion Trine a scare before falling 42-27 on the road…senior RB Emmanuel Stewart ran for 138 yards to give him 5,088 for his career—the 30th rusher in NCAA Division III history to reach that milestone…freshman Clarence Madison added 76 yards on five rush attempts and game highs of seven catches and 81 yards with three touchdowns against the Thunder…freshman Jack Wurzer, who completed 17 of 34 passes for 196 yards and four TDs in that game, has a chance to set the single-season school record for passing efficiency; he currently ranks second with a 162.6 rating…three-time all-conference senior LB Chris Adams had seven total tackles to give 200 for his career…Wurzer is first in the MIAA with 23 TD passes, a school record, and 1903 passing yards…Stewart is second active all-time leading rusher in the nation, third with 5,790 all-purpose yards and fourth with 8.9 points per game…senior WR Jerron McGaw is third all-time among active Division III leaders with 97.2 receiving yards per game…senior LB Tim McPhee extends his career high of 77 tackles, which leads the Bulldogs and ranks third in the conference.


Albion (6-3, 3-3)

Albion put up 63 points vs. Finlandia last Saturday, its third game with at least 56 points this season…Albion rolled up 461 rushing yards against Finlandia, its second game this season with at least 440 rushing yards in a game…Albion is 2nd in Division III with 250 first downs, 4th in total offense (534 yards per game) and 10th in scoring offense (45 points per game)…RB Zach Serzo (Lake Orion, Mich.) produced his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, finishing with 153 yards and three touchdowns vs. Finlandia…LB Chase Knopf (Palmetto, Fla./Braden River) collected his first career interception against Finlandia.


Alma (1-8, 0-6)

The Alma football team dropped a tough decision at Olivet on Saturday (Nov. 3). Alma erased an 11-point deficit in the second half to take a 34-30 lead with 3:30 left, but left enough time for the Comets to score the eventual game-winning touchdown. The Scots would turn it over in Olivet territory on its next possession with 23 seconds remaining. Junior quarterback Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) threw for 223 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich./Concord) caught a personal-best eight passes for 108 yards and a score.


Finlandia (0-9, 0-6)

Joshua Eve pushed his kickoff return yardage to 424 yards breaking the school record of 378 he set last year. Dillion Hueckstaedt pushed his double-digit tackle streak to six games.


RV/NR Hope (7-2, 5-1)

The Hope College football team rode the leadership of its seniors to its fifth straight victory on Saturday as the Flying Dutchmen defeated Kalamazoo College, 33-7, at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium in the annual battle for the Wooden Shoes. The Flying Dutchmen, now 5-1 in the MIAA and 7-2 overall, kept their hopes alive for a share of the conference championship with a Senior Day victory in the regular-season home finale. Hope sacked Kalamazoo five times. Senior defensive end Tate Knapp (Dorr, Mich./Hamilton) had a huge day with three sacks, giving him the MIAA lead with 10 for the season. Defensively, the Flying Dutchmen put the clamps on Kalamazoo's offense, allowing a season-low 137 yards of total offense, with only 50 of those yards coming after the first quarter.


Kalamazoo (7-2, 4-2)

The Kalamazoo College football team lost 33-7 at Hope College on Saturday. Zach VanFaussien finished 12-of-23 for 94 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The quarterback also led the Hornets in rushing with 29 yards on 15 carries. Anthony Giovanni led the Hornet receivers with 26 yards on three catches. Sam Matthews (15 yards) and Jared Pittman (12 yards) also made three catches apiece. Jakob Frederick and Jacob Chantres each had 11 tackles to led the Kalamazoo defense. Kalamazoo returns home to face Trine on Senior Day next Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.


Olivet (6-3, 4-2)

The Olivet College football team hung on to beat Alma, 37-34. Lane Porter threw a 39-yard touchdown to Jacob Jodway with 1:33 left in the game, and then Devin Pascavage intercepted an Alma pass with 23 seconds. For the game, Porter threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns on 19-of-26 passing. Matthew Ellis had 18 carries for 136 yards, and five receptions for 61 yards. Jamaul Martin rushed 17 times for 122 yards and two scores. Jodway caught five passes for 79 yards. Coleton Swims topped he defense with nine tackles, with seven solo stops. Mo Young had eight tackles, including two for minus six yards. This season, Ellis now has 995 rushing yards, tied for the fifth-most yards in school history. Martin has 967 rushing yards. Olivet has never had two running backs eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing plateau in the same season. Ellis and Martin both have 11 rushing touchdowns to tie Mick Faasen for the fifth-most in a season.


#12/13 Trine (9-0, 6-0)

Defeated Adrian, 42-27. Lamar Carswell rushed for 229 yards in the second half on his way to 259 total rushing yards on the day.
