Eight MIAA Football Student-Athletes Named 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District®

Eight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football student-athletes from three institutions were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Division III Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on Thursday for their academic and athletic success.

Kalamazoo's Hunter Angileri (Jr., C, Southgate, Mich.), Greg Kearns (Jr., K, Howell, Mich.), and Zach Van Faussien (Sr., QB, Beverly Hills, Mich.) along with Olivet's Matthew Ellis (So., RB, Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Trenton Monroe (Sr., TE< Kalamazoo, Mich.) were voted to the All-District® 6 team. Trine's Lucas Garza (Jr., PK, Syracuse, Ind.), Elijah Klepper (Sr., TE, Mendon, Mich.), and Mason McFarland (Jr., DL, Berrien Springs, Mich.) were voted to the All-District® 7 team.

All eight student-athletes are now eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America® honors.

Angileri, a two-year starter for the Hornets, has a 3.89 grade-point average in Chemistry; this season, Angileri aided Kalamazoo on averaging 131.2 rushing yards per game and 307.4 yards per game in total offense.

Kearns was a three-time MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week in 2018 and finished the season with 60 points scored on 27 extra points and 11 field goals. He boasts a 3.67 GPA in Business.

Van Faussien was integral in Kalamazoo's 7-3 overall record this fall as the starting quarterback; in MIAA play, Van Faussien finished third in the MIAA with 19 touchdown passes. Off the field, Van Faussien has a 3.65 GPA in Economics.

Ellis was the lone sophomore on the District 6 team, owning a 3.84 GPA in Exercise Science. Ellis was a Second-Team All-MIAA pick this fall, finishing the year with 1,075 yards rushing and 228 yards receiving with 14 touchdowns.

Monroe, an Actuarial Science major with a 3.77 GPA, was named the 2018 MIAA Pete Schmidet Scholar-Athlete Award winner and garnered First-Team All-MIAA honors.

Garza, a 3.87 GPA in Sport Management, is second on Trine in scoring thanks to 59-of-62 on extra points during the Thunder's 10-0 regular season.

Klepper has a 3.89 GPA in Exercise Science and is a two-time First-Team All-MIAA selection. On the season, Klepper has 12 catches for 152 yards, including four touchdowns.

McFarland is among the Trine leaders in tackels with 39 this season, including three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. McFarland owns an unblemished 4.00 GPA in Finance.

CoSIDA's NCAA Division III District 6 includes Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin; District 7 covers Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Members of CoSIDA from the district vote on Academic All-District® honors. Student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale and must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
