Trine's Abbs Selected as AFCA Region 4 Coach of the Year

Trine's Abbs Selected as AFCA Region 4 Coach of the Year

Troy Abbs, head coach for the Trine football team, garnered NCAA Division III Region 4 Coach of the Year honors from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The honor is the first of its kind for Abbs and grants him eligibility for National Coach of the Year accolades, which will be announced in January.

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association's five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The winners are selected by active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.

In his third season at the helm of the Trine program, Abbs has aided the program to a 23-9 record, including an 11-1 season this past fall. The Thunder captured the 2017 MIAA Championship after going 10-0 during the regular season, including a 6-0 mark against MIAA foes. Trine advanced to the NCAA Second Round after a 63-24 victory over Monmouth (Ill.) in the first round.
