MIAA Athletes of the Week - January 7, 2019
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on January 6, 2019. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

Kevin Gamble, Alma
Senior, Forward/Center
Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

Gamble averaged 14.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in two MIAA victories last week to vault the Scots to the top of the league standings. Alma, who had just one win on the season entering the week, benefitted from an 18-point, 11-rebound effort from Gamble on the road at Calvin Jan. 5 in the Scots' 67-66 victory. Gamble started the week with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes of play in Alma's 74-61 win over Kalamazoo Jan. 2; the senior added two blocks and a steal in the contest.

Brandi Dawson, Trine
Senior, Guard
Garrett, Ind.

Dawson scored a game-high 21 points to go with five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in Trine's road win over No. 5 Hope Jan. 2, giving the Thunder the outright lead in the MIAA standings. Dawson converted on her first six field goal attempts of the game and finished 9-of-14 from the field. Dawson then added nine points and six rebounds in 21 minutes in Trine's 82-42 win at Olivet Jan. 5.

Drew Mandell, Olivet
Junior, 149
Dundee, Mich.

Mandell improved to 16-1 on the year with a 4-0 week at 149 pounds at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals Jan. 4. Mandell tallied three first-period pins, including a 30-second fall in the event opener against Johns Hopkins. Mandell added pins against Heidelberg and No. 16 UW-Whitewater. Against No. 4 Ithaca, Mandell posted a 12-8 come-from-behind decision, aided by a third-period reversal.
