MIAA Athletes of the Week - November 5, 2018
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on November 4, 2018. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week

Lamar Carswell, Trine
Senior, Running Back
Toledo, Ohio

Carswell rushed for 259 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns in Trine's 42-27 win over Adrian Nov. 3. Carswell's 55-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter put Trine up for good, adding to a 22-yard TD run earlier in the game; Carswell again found the end zone in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard scamper. Carswell posted 229 yards in the second half, giving the senior his fourth 200-yard rushing game of the season; he also set Trine single-season marks for total touchdowns and points scored and set an MIAA single-season record with most points scored against MIAA opponents (120).
 

MIAA Football Defensive Player of the Week

Tate Knapp, Hope
Senior, Defensive End
Dorr, Mich.

Knapp registered three of Hope's five sacks in the Flying Dutchmen's 33-7 win over Kalamazoo Nov. 3. All three of Knapp's sacks were solo efforts, finishing with six tackles (four solo, two assists). As a team, Hope held Kalamazoo to just 137 yards of total offense, with only 43 yards rushing on 33 attempts.
 

MIAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Jeffery Barnett, Trine
Senior, Returner/Wide Receiver
Fremont, Ohio

Barnett was critical in creating a turning point in Trine's 42-27 victory against Adrian Nov. 3, taking a late second quarter kickoff 79 yards for his third special teams touchdown of the season to knot the game at 21-21 and halt Adrian's momentum heading into the break. It was Barnett's second score of the day, after catching a 51-yard touchdown pass to first put Trine on the board in the first quarter.

Bobby McCaw, Calvin
Senior, Forward
Dubuque, Iowa

McCaw fueled Calvin's offense in a pair of MIAA Men's Soccer Tournament wins to aid the Knights in capturing the 2018 MIAA Men's Soccer Tournament Championship Nov. 3. In Calvin's 5-0 win over Hope Oct. 30, McCaw scored the game-winner in the 26th minute and added a second-half insurance goal. In the title game Nov. 3, McCaw put the Knights on the board in the 16th minute on the way to Calvin's 2-1 win over Adrian.

Chris Morrish, Calvin
Sophomore, Goalkeeper
Bradenton, Fla.

Morrish anchored Calvin's defense on the way to the Knights earning the 2018 MIAA Men's Soccer Tournament title. Against Hope in the semifinals Oct. 30, Morrish made four saves in Calvin's 5-0 shutout win. In the title game against Adrian Nov. 3, Morrish finished with two saves as the Knights prevailed, 2-1.

McKenna Mahoney, Adrian
Freshman, Forward
Trenton, Mich.

Mahoney scored both game-winning goals for Adrian as the Bulldogs won the 2018 MIAA Women's Soccer Tournament Championship, granting Adrian their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Mahoney scored in the 52nd minute of Adrians 3-0 win over Calvin Oct. 31 in the semifinals. Against Hope in the championship game Nov. 3, Mahoney's re-direction header off a corner kick in the 13th minute was the game's only goal as Adrian defeated the nationally-ranked Flying Dutch, 1-0.

Ayverie Giller, Adrian
Junior, Goalkeeper
Grand Ledge, Mich.

Giller posted two shutouts during Adrian's MIAA tournament championship run, including a four-save effort in the Bulldogs' 1-0 shutout of nationally-ranked Hope Nov. 3 in the MIAA Women's Soccer Tournament Championship game. Giller started the week with six saves in Adrian's 3-0 semifinal win over Calvin Oct. 31. In 20 games this season, Giller owns a .841 save percentage and has aided Adrian in 11 shutouts for a 0.79 goals-against average.

Jake Burris, Albion
Senior
Chelsea, Mich.

Burris added a pair of diving victories at Calvin's meet Nov. 2-3 to his season efforts, posting a score of 488.55 on the 1-meter board, good for a regional qualifying score. Burris also had an RQS on the 3-meter board, taking first against a field of eight competitors with a score of 505.35 for 11 dives.

Ben Holstege, Calvin
Senior
Keswick, Va.

Holstege was a three-time winner at Calvin's meet Nov. 2-3, touching first in the 100 back (50.10), 200 back (1:54.71) and 200 IM (1:56.84); his times in the 200 IM and 200 back are the best thus far in the MIAA this season. Holstege also swam on Calvin's winning 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay, and 200 Medley Relay teams.


Sara Plohetski, Hope
Senior
South Lyon, Mich.

Plohetski was a two-time winner in Hope's win over NCAA Division II Davenport Nov. 2, posting victories on the 1-meter (222.20) and 3-meter (203.20) boards. Then, participating in the second day of Calvin's meet Nov. 3, Plohetski was second on the 1-meter board with a score of 377.60 for the 11-dive event.

MIAA Women's Swimmer of the Week

Samantha Swingewood, Albion
Freshman
Carmel, Ind.

Swingewood helped Albion finish second at Calvin last weekend, posting wins in the 200 IM (2:13.15), 400 IM (4:43.01) and 200 butterfly (2:11.66). In the 400 IM, Swingewood won by .18; her margin was even closer in the 200 fly, out-touching the field by .02. All three of her times are tops in the MIAA thus far.

Grace Kellogg, Calvin
Freshman, OH/DS
Belleville, Mich.

Kellogg was a key factor in Calvin's two victories last weekend to capture the MIAA Volleyball Tournament Championship. Against Albion in the semifinals, Kellogg notched 10 kills while hitting .444 and adding 13 digs in the three-set win. In the MIAA Tournament Championship game against Hope, Kellogg had a team-best 14 digs while adding four kills and two service aces.

Ellie Westrate, Calvin
Freshman, Setter
Sun Prairie, Wis.

Westrate helped guide the Calvin attack last weekend in aiding the Knights in their MIAA Volleyball Tournament Championship. Against Hope Nov. 3, Westrate delt out 22 assists to go with six digs in the Knights' 3-1 win. The day previous against Albion in the semifinals, Westrate had 17 assists to go with eight digs and two service aces.

Trevor Piggott, Olivet
Sophomore, 285
Ionia, Mich.

Piggott was the heavyweight champion at the Ben McMullen Open at Muskegon Community College Nov. 3. In a bracket with 29 participants, Piggott went 5-0 with a pin in the round of 16. Piggott finished the day with a 3-1 decision over teammate Owen Miller in the championship.
