MIAA Players of the Week - September 24, 2018

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on September 23, 2018. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Brett Slayton, Hope
Senior
Holland, Mich.

Slayton posted a time of 25:21.9 over the 8K course at the Grand Rapids Community College Raider Invitational Sept. 21. Slayton finished 24th overall and aided Hope in finishing seventh as a team. 

MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Lauren Arquette, Kalamazoo
Senior
Canton, Mich.

Arquette was the top MIAA finisher and top NCAA Division III harrier at the Grand Rapids Community College Raider Invitational Sept. 21, crossing the 5K course in 18:28.5 to place 12th overall. Arquette was 41 seconds faster than the next Division III and MIAA competitor and helped the Hornets place sixth overall.

MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week

Josh Gibson, Hope
Senior
Grandville, Mich.

Gibson was the medalist at the MIAA Jamboree #2, hosted at Trine Sept. 22, tying the course record and MIAA record with a 65 to win the event by four strokes. His effort on Saturday went with a top 10 finish at the NCAA Division III Preview in Lexington, Ky., where he turned in rounds of 80, 73, and 66.

MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week

Taylor Kehoe, Saint Mary's
Senior
Traverse City, Mich.

Kehoe was the medalist at the MIAA Jamboree #2, hosted by Saint Mary's Sept. 22, by shooting a 77, five strokes better than the 55-golfer field by leading with an event-best 11 pars. Kehoe's effort aided Saint Mary's in winning the Jamboree by a 27-stroke margin.

Tad Davis, Adrian
Senior, Midfielder/Forward
Trenton, Mich.

Davis tallied a goal and two assists in two games last week for Adrian, including two assists in the Bulldogs' 3-0 win at Bluffton Sept. 19. Along with assisting on the game-winner in the 31st minute, Davis added an assist on Adrian's second goal in the 65th minute. Davis also scored Adrian's lone goal against Case Western Reserve Sept. 22.
 

Sophie Bubnar, Saint Mary's
Freshman, Forward
Fenton, Mich.

Bubnar was involved in all four of Saint Mary's goals last week, including scoring the game-winning goal in the Belles' 2-0 win over Bluffton Sept. 22. Bubnar converted in the 23rd minute and then added an assist in the 62nd minute against Bluffton. Earlier in the week, Bubnar scored both of Saint Mary's goals in a 5-2 setback at North Park Sept. 18.
 

Lindsay Kooy, Hope
Senior, Defender
Metamora, Mich.

Kooy was a key defender for Hope, as the Flying Dutch added two shutout wins to their season tally last week. In Hope's 4-0 win over Elmhurst Sept. 18, Kooy added an insurance goal while helping hold Elmhurst to just two shots on goal. Kooy also helped Hope hold John Carroll to three shots on goal in a 3-0 road win Sept. 22.

Jaxon Davis, Trine
Freshman
Angola, Ind.

Davis went 4-0 last week, with wins at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles. In Trine's 6-3 win over Franklin Sept. 18, Davis posted a 6-1, 6-0 singles win to go with an 8-4 doubles victory. Against Grace (Ind.) Sept. 20, Davis paired with Isaac Everitt for an 8-6 doubles win to go with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 win to have a hand in two of Trine's three team points.

MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Alise Haddad, Albion
Freshman
Grand Blanc, Mich.

Haddad advanced to the backdraw semifinals at the ITA Central Regional Sept. 21-24, hosted by Kalamazoo. Haddad posted three consecutive straight-set wins after an opening-round three-set setback for her collegiate debut. Haddad then lost in three sets to No. 9 seed Madeleine Paolucci.

Sarah DeVries, Calvin
Junior, Middle Hitter/Setter
Grand Rapids, Mich.

In two five-set wins over nationally-ranked opponents last week, DeVries averaged 3.2 kills, 4.7 assists, 1.6 digs, and 1.2 blocks per set to pace the Knights. Against No. 13 Hope Sept. 22, DeVries had 16 kills, 26 assists, seven digs, and six blocks in Calvin's 3-2 home win. Earlier in the week against No. 19 Chicago Sept. 18, DeVries had 16 kills, 21 assists, nine digs, and six blocks.
 

Grace VanDorn, Albion
Sophomore, Setter
North Aurora, Ill.

VanDorn helped Albion start the MIAA season with a 2-0 mark while adding a non-conference win last week. Against MIAA foe Saint Mary's Sept. 18, VanDorn tallied 49 assists and 14 digs with one kill and two blocks in Albion's five-set road win. With her double-double of 14 digs and 29 assists against Capital Sept. 22, VanDorn moved into third place in Albion history for career double-doubles.
