MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for May 8

On Monday, the MIAA awarded 10 weekly honors for standout performances in men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, softball, and men's and women's tennis.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for May 8 are:

• Paul Johnson, Albion (Men’s Lacrosse Defense)
• Zach Hubbell, Alma (Men’s Lacrosse Offense)
• Ellis Chalfant, Calvin (Women’s Lacrosse Defense)
• Kelly Pepper, Calvin (Women’s Lacrosse Offense)
• Aaron Gillespie, Olivet (Baseball Pitcher)
• Jacob Heller, Trine (Baseball Position)
• Morgan Stratton, Alma (Softball Pitcher)
• McKenzie Creed, Alma (Softball Position)
• Daniel Henry, Kalamazoo (Men’s Tennis)
• Claire Hallock, Hope (Women’s Tennis)

 

Men's Lacrosse

 

Defensive Player of the Week


Paul Johnson, Albion

Senior, LSM
Novi, Mich.

• Helped Albion's defense in two MIAA Tournament wins to aid the Britons in winning the MIAA championship

• Against Alma in the championship game, tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers in holding Alma to eight goals

• In semifinal win over Olivet,had two ground balls and a caused turnover in 9-6 win

Men's Lacrosse

 

Offensive Player of the Week


Zach Hubbell, Albion

Senior, M
East Lansing, Mich.

• Guided Albion's attack in aiding the Britons to the 2017 MIAA Tournament championship

• Scored a game-high three goals with a ground ball and two caused turnovers in semifinal win over Olivet

• Scored a key first-half goal to help Albion own a 6-4 lead at halftime on the way to an 11-8 championship victory over Alma

Defensive Player of the Week


Ellis Chalfant, Calvin

Sophomore, G
St. Louis, Mo.

• Anchored Calvin's defense that shut out Hope in the championship game of the 2017 MIAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament

• Made three saves along with four ground balls in the title game win

• In 15-4 win over Albion in the semifinal, made five saves and registered a caused turnover

Offensive Player of the Week


Kelly Pepper, Calvin

Sophomore, M/A
Wyckoff, N.J.

• Was a key contributor to Calvin scoring 30 goals in two MIAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament wins for the Knights

• Scored a team-tying high four goals with one assist in semifinal win over Albion 

• Scored three goals and three assists - including a point on each of the first five Calvin goals - to aid the Knights in 15-0 title game win over Hope

Baseball

 

Pitcher of the Week


Aaron Gillespie, Olivet

Freshman, P/OF
Memphis, Mich.

• Threw seven-inning complete game win against Alma May 6, notching five strikeouts in 1-0 road victory

• Scattered seven hits in the win, which was also his fourth consecutive complete game 

Baseball

 

Position Player of the Week


Jacob Heller, Trine

Senior, 1B/C
Fort Wayne, Ind.

• In a 3-1 week for Trine, went .588 at the plate (10-for-17) with a .882 slugging percentage

• Scored 10 runs - at least two in each game against Albion - with four in 15-14 come-from-behind win May 7

• In home doubleheader May 7, went 7-of-9 at the plate with six runs and six RBI with two stolen bases

Softball

 

Pitcher of the Week


Morgan Stratton, Alma

Senior, P
Grand Blanc, Mich.

• Went 3-0 inside the circle to aid in Alma's 2017 MIAA Softball Tournament championship, throwing 20.0 innings

• Registered 18 strikeouts, with eight coming in the championship game against Trine

• Also had nine strikeouts to no walks while scattering three hits in 5-2 win over Trine May 4

Position Player of the Week


McKenzie Creed, Alma

Sophomore, IF
Edwardsburg, Mich.

• Batted 7-of-12 with eight RBI in three Alma wins to aid the Scots in winning the 2017 MIAA Softball Tournament title

• In 10-2 win over Trine in the championship game, had a two-run home run in the first inning and finished going 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored

• Had a first-inning two-run single against Saint Mary's in Alma's 5-1 victory in their opening game

Men's Tennis

 

Player of the Week


Daniel Henry, Kalamazoo

Freshman
Kalamazoo, Mich.

• Had a 4-0 week with two singles and two doubles wins to help Kalamazoo win the 2017 MIAA Men's Tennis Tournament championship

• Had the match's decisive point in championship win over Calvin, a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles

• Against Adrian in the semifinals, was part of an 8-0 No. 3 doubles win to go with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles

Women's Tennis

 

Player of the Week


Claire Hallock, Hope

Freshman
Lakeland, Fla.

• Helped Hope win the MIAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive time by scoring two points in both the MIAA title match win vs. Kalamazoo and semifinal victory vs. Saint Mary's

• In a 5-1 victory against Kalamazoo in the championship, claimed wins of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and 8-1 at No. 3 doubles

• In a 5-0 victory against Saint Mary's, serve up wins of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and 9-7 at No 3 doubles
