MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for May 1

On Monday, the MIAA awarded 13 weekly honors for standout performances in men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, softball, women's tennis, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for May 1 are:

• Mary Singler, Saint Mary's (Women’s Lacrosse Offense)
• Jonathan Keane, Calvin (Baseball Pitcher)
• Ian Mikowski, Adrian (Baseball Position)
• Sydney Jones, Hope (Softball Pitcher)
• Sammi Adams, Hope (Softball Position)

Defensive Player of the Week


Matt Lowes, Albion

Junior, D
Scotts, Mich.

• Was a key factor in aiding Albion secure the 2017 MIAA regular season title with a 2-0 week

• Allowed just one goal in settled play in two MIAA wins while causing three turnovers and adding six ground balls

• Was part of defense that gave up just 8.5 goals per game in two wins

Offensive Player of the Week


Chase Hunyadi, Alma

Freshman, A
Pepper Pike, Ohio

• Became only the ninth player in DIII history to tally 12 assists in a game with his effort in 22-11 win at Calvin April 25

• Is the lone player in any NCAA division to have 12 assists in a game this season

• Finished the week with 20 points (7 goals, 13 assists) while adding three ground balls

Defensive Player of the Week


Clare Theisen, Saint Mary's

Junior, M
Downers Grove, Ill. 

• In a 2-0 week against MIAA opponents, helped Saint Mary's secure the No. 2 seed in MIAA Tournament

• Totalled 10 ground balls, four draw controls, and seven caused turnovers in 13-11 win over Hope April 27

• In win over Adrian April 29, had nine draw controls to go with four ground balls

Women's Lacrosse

 

Offensive Player of the Week


Mary Singler, Saint Mary's

Freshman, M
Louisville, Ky.

• Tallied a game-high four goals with two assists in win over Hope April 27 to aid in a 2-0 week against MIAA opponents

• Followed up with five goal, one assist game against Adrian April 29

• On the week, added seven ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers

Baseball

 

Pitcher of the Week


Jonathan Keane, Calvin

Sophomore, P
Brookfield, Wis.

• In two appearances on the mound, threw two seven-inning complete game shutouts while giving up just four hits with 18 strikeouts

• Struck out nine in 1-0 win over Alma April 24, followed up with nine strikeouts in 4-0 win over Olivet April 29

• Also went .348 at the plate with hits in six MIAA games last week, adding a double in his 4-0 win over Olivet

Baseball

 

Position Player of the Week


Ian Mikowski, Adrian

Senior, OF
Grand Rapids, Mich.

• Batted .625 in four MIAA games, hitting at least two hits in each of those games, as Adrian secured at least a share of their ninth consecutive MIAA title

• With three stolen bases April 29, became Adrian's all-time career leader in stolen bases (58)

• Scored seven runs with three extra-base hits, adding three walks and two RBI

Softball

 

Pitcher of the Week


Sydney Jones, Hope

Junior, P
South Lyon, Mich.

• Made three appearances against two of the top teams in the MIAA, posting a 3-0 record with two complete game wins as Hope earned a share of the MIAA regular season title

• Gave up no runs in 19.0 innings while striking out 26 to four walks and five hits

• Against Trine April 26, threw a two-hit shutout while striking out 14 in 3-0 Hope victory

Softball

 

Position Player of the Week


Sammi Adams, Hope

Senior, OF
Griffin, Ind.

• Batted .583 with four RBI, six runs scored, and three stolen bases during a 4-0 week for Hope to aid the team in earning a share of the MIAA regular season title

• Went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored in 14-5 victory against nationally-ranked Trine April 26

• Against No. 23-ranked Alma April 29, had a stolen base in both games, while going 1-for-3 with two runs scored in 3-1 win

Women's Tennis

 

Player of the Week


Ellie Benzel, Calvin

Senior
San Dimas, Calif.

• Helped Calvin secure the No. 2 seed in the MIAA tournament with a 2-0 singles record and 1-1 doubles record in two MIAA wins

• Against Kalamazoo April 29, won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to go with 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles to aid Calvin in first win over Kalamazoo since 2011 

• In 6-3 team win over Saint Mary's April 26, came back to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles

Men's Outdoor Field

 

Athlete of the Week


Josh Izenbart, Hope

Freshman
Glenwood, Ill.

• Placed fifth in the decathlon at the Hillsdale Gina Relays (5,581) to rank 42nd nationally

• Won both the decathlon high jump (1.92m) and 400m dash (51.02)

Men's Outdoor Track

 

Athlete of the Week


Jordan Davis, Adrian

Junior
Ottawa Lake, Mich. 

• Turned in two top-five finishes at Hillsdale Gina Relays, finishing fifth in 110m hurdles (14.76); that time is 20th in the nation

• Also ran the 200m dash (22.28), which is the second fastest time in the MIAA this spring

Women's Outdoor Field

 

Athlete of the Week


Alison Rich, Hope

Junior
Haslett, Mich.

• Won the heptathlon at the Hillsdale Gina Relays (4,280), turning in a score that is 14th nationally

• Won the javelin during the competition (35.3m) as well as the 800m run (2:30.27)

Women's Outdoor Track

 

Athlete of the Week


Erin Herrmann, Hope

Senior
Wheaton, Ill. 

• Broke own Hope record in the 3000m steeplechase at the Hillsdale Gina Relays, finishing fourth in the field (10:27.23)

• That time is the fastest in NCAA Division III by 14 seconds
