MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for April 24

On Monday, the MIAA awarded 14 weekly honors for standout performances in men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for April 24 are:

Defensive Player of the Week


Kyle DeCamp, Albion

Junior, M
Howell, Mich. 

• In a 2-0 week for Albion against MIAA opponents, went 34-of-37 on faceoffs with 25 ground balls

• In 12-11 win over Trine April 22, scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left in regulation and then won the ensuing faceoff to secure the victory

• Was 16-of-16 in face offs with 13 ground balls in 20-5 win over Calvin April 19

Offensive Player of the Week


Trevor Bailey, Olivet

Freshman, A
Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 

• Was Olivet's top attacker in a 2-0 week for the Comets, moving Olivet into second place overall into the final week of MIAA play

• In 17-16 overtime win at Hope April 22, which gave the Flying Dutchmen their first MIAA loss of the season, tallied five goals while adding a ground ball 

• Added a hat trick in win over Kalamazoo April 19, scoring on all three shots on goal

Defensive Player of the Week


Emily Cefaratti, Calvin

Senior, A
Hinsdale, Ill. 

• In a 2-0 week for the Knights, had nine caused turnovers, four draw controls, and nine ground balls as Calvin gave up just five goals on the week

• Against Hope April 22, had six ground balls, six caused turnovers while aiding in the offense

• In win over Kalamazoo April 18, helped hold the Hornets to 4-of-9 in clear attempts while aiding the attack with six goals and four assists

Offensive Player of the Week


Annie Rice, Adrian

Sophomore, A
Reisterstown, Md.

• Assisted on game-winning goal in 15-14 victory at Albion April 19 with three seconds remaining, capping a two-goal, four-assist day

• Helped Adrian improve to 4-1 on the year in MIAA play with three goal, two assist effort at Alma April 21 in the Bulldogs' 16-9 win

• Also had two ground balls and three caused turnovers against Alma

Pitcher of the Week


Alex Valasek, Alma

Senior, P
Saginaw, Mich. 

• Threw eight-inning shutout in 1-0 win over Calvin April 21, with six strikeouts to no walks, for his first win of the season

• Gave up just one hit in the game, giving Calvin just their second shutout loss of the season

Position Player of the Week


Brian Killinger, Adrian

Senior, IF
Grand Rapids, Mich.

• Aided Albion to a 4-0 week, going 9-for-14 (.643) with five runs and three RBI with four stolen bases

• In 13-0 win over Albion April 22, went 3-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run

• Defensively, was perfect on 15 chances, helping turn three double plays

Pitcher of the Week


Morgan Stratton, Alma

Senior, P
Grand Blanc, Mich.

• Helped Alma take the lead in the MIAA standings with two road victories in doubleheader sweep at No. 6 Trine April 23

• In 1-0 game-one victory, threw a complete game two-hit shutout while striking out five and aiding in a double play defensively; the shutout was the first for Trine this season

• In the second game of the day, again threw a complete game, holding the nation's fourth-ranked slugging percentage team to just two extra-base hits while striking out five

Softball

 

Position Player of the Week


Maddie DeGroot, Calvin

Sophomore, IF
Hudsonville, Mich.

• Aided Calvin to a 3-1 week against MIAA opponents, including a doubleheader sweep of conference leader Hope to give the Flying Dutch their first league losses of the season

• In game one against Hope April 21, her solo home run in the first inning lifted Calvin to 1-0 victory

• Had three multi-hit games on the week, including a 3-for-3 effort with two doubles against Kalamazoo April 22 to finish week with .455 batting average and .727 slugging percentage

Player of the Week


Matt VanWinkle, Calvin

Junior
St. Joseph, Mich.

• In 5-4 win over Adrian April 22, helped Calvin secure third place in the MIAA standings with an 8-6 No. 1 doubles win and a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles

• Added an 8-1 No. 1 doubles and 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles in sweep over Albion April 19

Women's Tennis

 

Player of the Week


Nancy Benda, Hope

Senior
Birmingham, Mich. 

• Assisted Hope in capturing at least a share of their 24th MIAA women's tennis championship

• Against Saint Mary's April 22, went 2-0 with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles to go with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles

• Also played the top spots against Albion APril 18, dropping just two games combined in doubles (8-0) and singles (6-0, 6-2)

Athlete of the Week


Reitsma Mpindi, Calvin

Senior
Grand Rapids, Mich.

• Moved into second place in the MIAA and into the top 50 in the NCAA with his long jump victory at Grand Valley State

• Registered a PR of 6.96m (22 feet, 10 inches) to win the event and lead a 1-2-3 finish by Calvin

Nick Salomon, Hope

Senior
Troy, Mich.

• Placed second in the 800 run (1:51.96) at the GVSU Al Owens Classic April 22

• His effort not only ranks first in the MIAA this spring but is ninth overall in the NCAAs this year

Women's Outdoor Field

 

Athlete of the Week


Kara Eck, Trine

Junior
Auburn, Ind.

• Moved into second in NCAA DIII with her program-record hammer throw at the Indiana Little States Championship, winning the event by nearly three meters (57.62m)

• Also finished fourth in the shot put (13.36m) and moved up to 15th nationally in the event

Women's Outdoor Track

 

Athlete of the Week


Emilee Kinney, Albion

Sophomore
Kenockee, Mich.

• Had three first-place finishes at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Invite, winning the 100m dash (12.62), 200m dash (25.79) and running a leg on the 4x100m relay (50.82) 

• Leads the MIAA in both the 100m and 200m races with her season-best times at the Polar Bear Invite
