MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for Feb. 27

On Monday, the MIAA awarded 10 weekly honors for standout performances in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, softball, men's and women's lacrosse, and softball.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for Feb. 27 are:

• Mike Welch, Calvin (Men’s Basketball)
• Cassidy Williams, Trine (Women’s Basketball)

• Maria Franco, Kalamazoo (Women’s Tennis)
• Trevor McManus, Albion (Men’s Lacrosse Defense)
• Rocco Mularoni, Hope (Men’s Lacrosse Offense)
• Alexandria Watts, Hope (Women’s Lacrosse Defense)
• Erin Caton, Hope (Women’s Lacrosse Offense)

Men's Basketball

 

Player of the Week


Mike Welch, Calvin

Senior, F/C
Stevensville, Mich.

• Aided Calvin in winning the 2017 MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament title Feb. 25

• Against Trine Feb. 24, came off the bnech to tally 15 points with team highs of 10 rebounds and four assists

• In win over nationally-ranked Hope Feb. 25, posted 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting while adding five rebounds and a blocked shot

Player of the Week


Cassidy Williams, Trine

Sophomore, G/F
Archbold, Ohio

• Was a defensive leader in helping Trine hold both MIAA foes to 42 points as the Thunder won their first-ever MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament title

• Individually, held her opponents to 8-of-29 from the field while adding 11 defensive rebounds and five steals in two games

• In semifinal win over Albion Feb. 24, had six points iwth team highs of eight rebounds and five assists

Sophomore
Fremont, Ohio 

• Was a two-time winner in Albion's win over Concordia (Mich.) Feb. 22

• Tallied a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles while also notching an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles

Athlete of the Week


Maria Franco, Kalamazoo

Junior
Quito, Ecuador 

• Went 3-1 on the weekend at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles, with a 6-2, 6-2 singles win vs. #11 Carleton while adding a doubles win

• Against regionally-ranked Coe, tallied a doubles victory before forcing three sets in singles

Men's Lacrosse

 

Defensive Player of the Week


Trevor McManus, Albion

Freshman, GK
Canton, Mich. 

• Posted 17 saves and a 51.5 saves percentage in aiding Albion in their 17-16 win against Kenyon Feb. 25

• Added a caused turnover and a save during a Kenyon 6-on-3 advantage in the fourth period

Men's Lacrosse

 

Offensive Player of the Week


Rocco Mularoni, Hope

Freshman
Hartland, Mich. 

• Scored six goals, including three during Hope's decisive 5-0 run to end the game in their victory over Benedictine Feb. 25

• Along with scoring the game-winner, added an assist offensively; also had two ground balls and two caused turnovers

Defensive Player of the Week


Alexandra Watts, Hope

Senior, GK
Union, Mich. 

• Made nine saves with a 75.0 percent save percentage in Hope's victory over Cleary Feb. 23

• Along with allowing just three goals, was 8-of-9 on successful clears to key the Hope offensive transition

Rochester Hills, Mich. 

• Had four goals and two assists in Hope's win vs. Cleary Feb. 23, including three goals in the first period

• Scored on all four shots taken for 100 percent shot and shots on goal percentage

Softball

 

Pitcher of the Week


Anna Gernant, Calvin

Sophomore
West Des Moines, Iowa

• Threw two complete game wins to open Calvin's season, including a no-hitter in the season-opener against Edgewood Feb. 24

• Set a new Calvin record with 18 strikeouts in no-hitter against Edgewood, only to match that total in 4-3 win over Lakeland Feb. 25

Softball

 

Position Player of the Week


Rachel Borden, Calvin

Sophomore
Edwardsburg, Mich.

• Went 8-of-14 at the plate over four games, adding four runs and four stolen bases

• Added an assist with a throw from left field to the plate to aid in Calvin's win over UW-Stevens Point Feb. 24
