MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for Jan. 23

On Monday, the MIAA awarded eight weekly honors for standout performances in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's track and field.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for Jan. 23 are:

• Trevor Gernaat, Alma (Men’s Basketball)
• Brandi Dawson, Trine (Women’s Basketball)
• Sebastian Tostado, Albion (Men’s Swimming/Diving)
• Kylene Slocum, Albion (Women’s Swimming/Diving)
• Jeffery Barnett, Trine (Men’s Indoor Field)
• Jasper Bassett, Trine (Men’s Indoor Track)
• Kara Eck, Trine (Women’s Indoor Field)
• Kaitlyn Arnold, Alma (Women’s Indoor Track)


Men's Basketball

 

Player of the Week


Trevor Gernaat, Alma

Senior, F
McBain, Mich.

• Aided Alma to a 2-0 week in MIAA play, averaging 28.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game

• In Alma's win over Trine Jan. 18, scored 30 points on 11-of-22 shooting while adding seven rebounds and three assists

• Followed up with a 27-point performance in road win over Albion Jan. 21, including 11-of-11 at the free throw line

Player of the Week


Brandi Dawson, Trine

Sophomore, G
Garrett, Ind.

• Averaged 26.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game for Trine on the week while shooting 66.7 percent from the field

• Against nationally-ranked Hope Jan. 18, scored 33 points on 12-of-17 shooting while adding six rebounds and three assists

• Was a key factor in Trine's win over Olivet Jan. 21, scoring 19 points in 20 minutes of play, going 8-of-13 from the field while adding four steals and four rebounds

Swimmer/Diver of the Week


Sebastian Tostado, Albion

Senior
Mexico City, Mexico 

• Was a two-time individual winner for Albion in their win over Hope Jan. 22, touching first in the 200 back (1:54.99) and 200 IM (1:57.09)

• Both swims, which were first-time swims for him since October of this year, rank second in the MIAA

• Added the fastest freestyle split in the medley relay (21.04)

Swimmer/Diver of the Week


Kylene Slocum, Albion

Senior
Otsego, Mich. 

• Won three individual events (200 IM, 100 breast, 200 breast) in Albion's meet against Hope Jan. 21

• Edged the field in the 200 breast (2:27.10) by over five seconds and the 100 breast (1:06.36) by over three seconds

• Was the winner in the 200 IM (2:14.01) while adding a relay win as the breaststroker for Albion in the 200 medley relay

Jeffery Barnett, Trine

Fremont, Ohio

• Set a school record in the long jump at the Keith Turner Alumni Open Jan. 21, measuring at 7.19m

• His distance (23 feet, 6.75 inches) re-set his own school record by one foot and ranks him first in the MIAA and fifth in the NCAA

Auburn, Ind.

• Won the 300m dash at the Keith Turner Alumni Open Jan. 21 to go with a second-place finish in the 600m run

• Crossed the line in 36.19 seconds for the 300m and 1:23.29 in the 600m races

• Was a two-time winner in throws at the Keith Turner Alumni Invitational, winning the shot put and weight throw

• Her shot put of 42 feet, 5 inches ranks 20th nationally; already in the top 10 nationally in the weight throw, her throw this week would rank 14th in the NCAA

• Placed second in the 300m run at the Grand Valley State Open Jan. 20 with a time of 9:50.08, re-setting her own school record in the event

• Her time improved her fourth-place rank time in the NCAA this season
