MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for Oct. 17

On Monday, the MIAA awarded 11 weekly honors for standout performances in football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's cross country.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for Oct. 17 are:

Player of the Week


Justin Madar, Olivet

Senior, DL
Holt, Mich.

• Was a key factor in Olivet's 31-14 win over Albion Oct. 15, which marked Olivet's first win over Albion since 2007

• Had four tackles on the day, including 2.5 sacks resulting in 24 yards lost

• Also had three quarterback pressures

Offensive
Player of the Week


Ty Fischbach, Trine

Senior, WR
Oxford, Ind. 

• Had seven receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns in 42-17 win over Kalamazoo Oct. 15

• Had a 30-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter that gave Trine the lead for good

• Added a touchdown of 22 yards in the waning seconds of the second quarter to give the Thunder a 42-10 halftime lead

Darren Ford, Hope

Howell, Mich.

• Tied MIAA record with four field goals in 25-7 win over Adrian Oct. 15 

• Finished with 13 points with an extra point to go with four field goals

• Also had four punts, averaging 38.0 yards per punt

Orland Park, Ill. 

• Named to Midwest Invitational All-Tournament team

• Helped Calvin go 5-0 on the week on 3.75 kills per set

• Had a .326 hitting percentage on the week, including .500 (12-1-22) against Wheaton Oct. 15

• Had two double-doubles in kills and digs in three-set wins over Wheaton Oct. 15 and Clarkson Oct. 14

Specialist of the Week


Alexis Thompson, Hope

Senior, L
Monroe, Mich.

• Named to Midwest Invitational All-Tournament team

• Helped Hope to 4-1 week, the lone setback coming against nationally-ranked Elmhurst

• Averaged 7.78 digs per set for the week, well above her season average of 5.76 d/s

• Had four service aces while Hope scored 61 percent of the time behind her serve

Chris Stanhope, Adrian

Dearborn, Mich.

• Helped anchor the Adrian defense in a pair of MIAA victories

• In Adrian's game against Albion for second place in the standings, helped hold the Brits to three shots on goal

• Had three shots, including two shots on goal, in win over Trine Oct. 11

• Was a key factor in team stopping counter attacks

• Scored three goals on the week to help Calvin to 2-0 week

• Had both game-winners for the Knights

• Had two goals in home win over Hope Oct. 11

• Had the game-winner against Kalamazoo Oct. 15 in the 81st minute

• Assisted on game-winning goal in 1-0 victory against Albion Oct. 15

• Helped Albion defense post back-to-back shutouts for the first time since last season

• Played all 90 minutes in both victories

• Aided in holding Calvin to just two shots on goal Oct. 12.

• Scored both game-winners for Albion in a 2-0 week to stay in postseason contention

• Score the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Hope Oct. 15, converting in the 66th minute

• Also scored Albion's first goal in 3-0 victory against Calvin Oct. 12 in the 38th minute

• Turned in a top-10 finish with his ninth-place effort (and eighth among college competitors) at UW-Oshkosh Kollege Town Invitational Oct. 15

• Finished the race in 25:13 to aid Calvin in finishing third overall in a field of 37 teams

• Was less than 30 seconds behind first place for the 8K event

Erin Herrmann, Hope

Senior
Wheaton, Ill.

• Won the UW-Oshkosh Kollege Town Invitational Oct. 15, beating 528 runners

• Her time of 21:22.48 for the 6K race won by four seconds

• Raced for her fourth victory of the season
