MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for Sept. 19

On Monday, the MIAA awarded 13 weekly honors for standout performances in football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's golf.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for Sept. 19 are:

Player of the Week


Cole Madry, Olivet

Bellevue, Mich.

• Had 2.5 sacks in Olivet's 30-7 win at Wisconsin Lutheran Sept. 17

• His 2.5 sacks resulted in a loss of 25 yards

• Also had a forced fumble while finishing with four total tackles

Offensive
Player of the Week


Michael Stephan, Hope

Senior, OL
Belding, Mich.

• Anchored offensive line that helped Hope total 518 rushing yards in a 57-28 win at Concordia-Chicago Sept. 17

• Created the groundwork that resulted in three Hope players finishing with over 150 yards apiece

• Hope's 518 yards rushing is the best single-game effort in NCAA Division III this season

• Senior captain also part of offensive line that gave up just one tackle for loss in the win

Special Teams
Player of the Week


Viet Nguyen, Kalamazoo

Sophomore, K
Livonia, Mich.

• Had six points on 2-for-2 field goal effort

• Had a long of 38-yard field goal conversion in Kalamazoo's 55-19 win over Rockford

• Also had three kickoffs for touchbacks, including one out of the end zone

Laura Danhoff, Calvin

Senior, OH
Willard, Ohio 

• With a career-high 20 kills in win over No. 8 Wittenberg Sept. 17, surpassed the 1,000-kill mark for her career

• Had an attack percentage of .441 on 111 attempts as Calvin defeated two top-10 ranked teams on the weekend

• Had 11 kills in three-set win over Adrian Sept. 14

• Earned All-Tournament team accolades at Wittenberg tournament

• Finished the week with 56 kills for 4.31 kills per set 

Specialist of the Week


Jenna Lodewyk, Calvin

Junior, S
Tinley Park, Ill. 

• In aiding Calvin to a 4-0 week, averaged 10.77 assists per set

• Handed out 46 assists in four-set win at No. 8 Wittenberg Sept. 17 

• Started the week with 33 assists, four digs, .500 attack percentage and two block assists in win over Adrian Sept. 14

• Finished the week with 21 kills and .362 attack percentage as a setter while adding seven service aces and 25 digs

• Lifted Calvin to a 2-0 start in MIAA play with a pair of shutouts against Adrian Sept. 13 and Hope Sept. 17

• Made five saves on the week while dropping his season goals-against average to 0.68 through six games

• In win at Hope Sept. 17, fended off four shots on goal

• Had a goal and an assist for Calvin in their 2-0 start in MIAA play

• Assisted on second goal in 2-0 victory against Adrian Sept. 13, helping give the Knights a leg up in the 78th minute

• Scored an insurance goal at Hope Sept. 17

Kristina Veljovic, Trine

Valparaiso, Ind.

• Had back-to-back shutouts against MIAA foes, which also gave the Thunder their first two-game winning streak in conference play since the 2011 season

• Stopped 10 shots in 1-0 road win at Albion Sept. 17

• In lone loss of the week, made 18 saves out of 20 shots on goal faced in 2-1 setback at Hope Sept. 12

• Earned first shutout of the week with a five-save effort against Saint Mary's Sept. 15

Offensive
Player of the Week


Allie Wittenbach, Hope

Senior, F
Eaton Rapids, Mich.

• Had seven points in a 3-0 week for Hope against MIAA opponents

• Scored two goals in game's first eight minutes against Trine Sept. 12, with her second goal being the match-winner

• Assisted on Hope's second-half goal in 3-1 win against Albion Sept. 15

• Added a goal in 7-2 victory at Olivet Sept. 17

• Had at least one point in all three of Hope's victories

Men's Cross Country

• Finished 17th at the University of Washington's Sundodger Invitational Sept. 17

• Crossed the line in 24:54, the second-highest finish for an NCAA Division III runner

• Helped the 17th ranked Calvin team place sixth overall as the top Division III team

Amherst, Ohio 

• Placed 12th overall at the University of Washington Sundodger Invitational Sept. 17

• Crossed the line in 21:23, helping the 13th-ranked Knights to a second-place finish overall

• Was the second-highest Division III finisher in the race

Josh Gibson, Hope

• Was the medalist at Irish Hills Intercollegiate Invitational Sept. 16-17, shooting five-under 139 to win by two strokes

• Finished second at MIAA Jamboree #2 with a two-under 70 at Bedford Valley Golf Course Sept. 13

• Shot a two-over 74 at Railside D3 Classic Sept. 17 to claim medalist honors at the five-team event

• Her single-round effort tied for the lowest round in Alma history

• Alma's team score of 333, good for second place overall, established a new team record
