MIAA Mourns the Passing of Former Alma SID

Former Alma College sports information director Mike Hanson passed away on Wednesday, June 18 in Missoula, Mont. He was 49.

Hanson served as Alma's sports information director from 2008 until May, when he accepted a position at the University of Montana as its assistant athletic director for communications.

During his tenure at Alma, Hanson initiated and coordinated the school’s transition to the new Presto Sports website, which has garnered critical acclaim for its design and content, and was intimately involved with the addition of seven new varsity sports at Alma – taking the school to 22 overall.

Prior to coming to Alma, Hanson spent two decades in public relations in the NFL, NBA and NHL, most recently as executive director of communications for the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers. He also worked for the NHL's Florida Panthers and in the NFL for the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins,  Houston Oilers and Minnesota Vikings. He is one of the few people to ever head a public relations/communications department in three major professional sports.

Hanson is survived by his wife, Jana, and two children, Zach and Sydney.
