Calvin Women’s Lacrosse Captures First MIAA Tournament Title

ALBION, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team captured its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament title with a 12-11 victory at Albion on Saturday evening.

Fueled by a seven-goal scoring streak, Calvin (12-5) staged a dramatic rally from five goals down to earn the victory over top seed and host Albion (10-7). With the win, the Knights advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in program history.  At the same time, Calvin avenged losses to the Britons in the 2015 MIAA Tournament and a loss earlier in the season at home.

The Knights will learn their postseason assignment on Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. during the NCAA III Tournament Selection Show.

Albion jumped out to an early lead to open the contest behind three goals from Cait Gaitley and another from MIAA Offensive MVP Kadie Koolwick to build a 7-2 advantage.

Calvin scored the game's next seven goals to take a 9-7 lead two minutes into the second half. Emily Cefaratti produced two goals and two assists and Kelly Pepper chipped in with two goals during the run.

Albion never regained the lead, but it kept the game close as Alex Radzville scored to make the score 9-8, Julie Wood scored to make the score 11-10, and Wood scored with 5:30 left to make it 12-11.

Albion had three free position shots down the stretch, but Calvin goalkeeper Ellis Chalfant was up to the task each time.

Calvin's Cefaratti and Amanda Davio and Albion's Gaitley and Wood finished with three goals apiece.

Both goalkeepers – Calvin's Chalfant and Albion's Victoria Della Pia – finished with 12 saves.
