(At the time of their memberships in the MIAA, Michigan State University was known as Michigan Agricultural College and Eastern Michigan University was known as Michigan Normal College.)

* In 1978-79, the men's and women's conferences merged into a combined governance under the single name MIAA. The Women's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WMIAA) was founded on March 20, 1941 and functioned through the 1977-78 school year.

** The NCAA first offered championships for women in 1981-82.

*** Accepted as an associate member for the purpose of competing only in football effective with the 2002 season. Membership ended with the conclusion of the 2007 football season.

**** Tri-State University accepted as provisional NCAA member effective with the 2004-05 school year. Eligible to compete for MIAA conference championships effective in 2004-05. Became eligible for NCAA post-season competition as a full NCAA Division III member in 2007-08. The name of Tri-State University was changed to Trine University effective August 1, 2008.

***** Finlandia will become an associate member for the purpose of competing only in football effective with the 2018 season.
