FREELAND, Mich. - Aided by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in nine sports, Calvin College captured the 2016-17 MIAA Commissioner's Cup, MIAA Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook announced Friday.

Calvin was triumphant in volleyball, indoor track and field, swimming & diving, outdoor track and field, and lacrosse on the women's side, and garnered titles in men's soccer, men's cross country, men's indoor track and field, and men's outdoor track and field. Their first-place finishes aided in posting a 135 point total to surpass Hope's 130 for the all-sport trophy.

Albion edged Trine for third place by 0.5 points, 97.5 to 97, with Alma in fifth with 88 points. Adrian (85.5), Kalamazoo (80) and Olivet (71) rounded out the scoring.

On the women's side, Hope and Calvin tied for the top spot with 68 points apiece. Making the biggest jump was Saint Mary's, as the Belles doubled their season point total in three sports, finishing second in women's lacrosse, third in softball, and fourth in tennis to finish sixth.

For the men, Calvin owned a five-point lead over Hope not only with their four team titles but runner-up finishes in men's golf, men's basketball, and men's swimming and diving. Kalamazoo jumped from eighth to sixth on the shoulders of an MIAA title in tennis and a runner-up finish in baseball.

The MIAA Commissioner's Cup is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league's 22 sports, 11 per gender; each school counts its top eight finishes by gender.
