Ninety Programs Earn MIAA Team GPA Accolades for 2016-17

FREELAND, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced Thursday (July 20) the 90 teams that earned the MIAA Team GPA Award for the 2016-17 academic year.

The MIAA Team GPA Award is presented to conference athletic teams that achieve a 3.300 or better GPA for an academic year. Grade-point averages are calculated at the end of the academic year.

Calvin and Kalamazoo led the way with 14 teams honored, followed by 12 apiece for Hope and Albion.

For the second consecutive year, seven of Saint Mary’s eight MIAA-sponsored sports achieved recognition for an MIAA-best 87.5 percent. Kalamazoo was second by percentage, with 14 of 18 eligible teams (75.0 percent).

After 10 teams surpassed the 3.600 team GPA threshold last season, 18 teams reached the high mark in 2016-17. Teams surpassing 3.700 in 2016-17 were Adrian volleyball (3.980), Trine men's golf (3.792), Calvin women's cross country (3.775) and Kalamazoo men's golf (3.739).

MIAA women's soccer saw all nine programs surpass the 3.300 team GPA standard. Along with women's soccer co-champions Kalamazoo and Hope, 16 of the 24 teams that won all or a share of 22 MIAA championships also earned Team GPA Award honors.

The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award each year since the 1998-99 academic year. Of note, both Calvin’s women’s cross country and Hope women’s cross country are the only programs to earn the Team GPA Award 19 consecutive academic years.
