MIAA Announces 2015-16 Team GPA Award Winners

FREELAND, Mich. – Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook recognized Monday 95 teams on the 2015-16 MIAA Team GPA Award list.

The MIAA Team GPA Award is presented to conference athletic teams that achieve a 3.300 or better GPA for an academic year. Grade-point averages are calculated at the end of the academic year.

Calvin led the way with 14 teams honored, followed by Albion’s 13 and Trine’s 12 squads recognized for their academic success. Also of note, seven of Saint Mary’s eight MIAA-sponsored sports achieved recognition.

Ten squads met or surpassed a team GPA of 3.6. Alma’s women’s cross country team, mentored by Matt Chevanec, combined to post a 3.71 team GPA. Trine’s women’s basketball (3.69), Calvin’s women’s cross country (3.69), Hope’s women’s cross country (3.68), and Olivet’s women’s tennis (3.67) rounded out the top five team academic performances.

The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award each year since the 1998-99 academic year. Of note, both Calvin’s women’s cross country and Hope women’s cross country are the only programs to earn the Team GPA Award 18 consecutive academic years.
