Three MIAA Men’s Golfers Earn Academic Honors

NORMAN, Okla. – Three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s golfers earned academic honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America Thursday (July 21) as the trio was named to the Cleveland Golf / Srixon All-America Scholar team.

For the second straight year, Trine’s Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich.) and Corey Bremigan (Russia, Ohio) along with Adrian College recent graduate Nick Hocker (Oxford, Mich.) were recognized for their combined excellence on the links and in the classroom.

A total of 212 players in Division I, 91 in Division II, 75 in Division III and 12 in NAIA earned the honor by the GCAA.

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 77.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

Dwyer's honor caps off a career that included two All-MIAA campaigns in addition to his two All-American Scholar honors. This past fall, Dwyer earned All-MIAA First Team recognition after medaling in two MIAA Jamboree rounds and finishing fifth in the conference in individual scoring. Dwyer also earned All-MIAA Second Team honors in 2014. During his career, Dwyer won individual medalist honors in four MIAA rounds. He graduated with a degree in golf management.

Bremigan also capped off a career that included All-MIAA honors. As a junior, Bremigan was an All-MIAA Second Team performer. This season, he won individual medalist honors in the MIAA Jamboree at Albion. The win gave the Bremigan three wins in conference rounds in his career. He graduated in May with a degree in civil engineering. Prior to graduating, he was inducted into the Order of the Engineer.

Hocker, who majored in business, just missed the All-MIAA First Team at the conference's fall championships in October. He led the Bulldogs with a 76.0 stroke average, which ranked seventh during the MIAA campaign in 2015-16. He helped Adrian to a top-4 finish in that event--ending the fall season with four-straight upper-half places in the MIAA Jamboree series. The Bulldogs' best performance came on a soggy Oct. 2 day when they were the Jamboree#7 runner-up as the host team, with Hocker tied for sixth overall and the team's co-leader with a 78.
One of Hocker's best moments was the Ted Barclay Spring Invitational at Denison University, where he was in third place out of 48 individuals with an even-par score of 71--only one stroke from tying for medalist.
